Performance - Edamovement Lab

Edamovement Lab is a New York–based Japanese performance collective founded by artists originally from Japan, dedicated to presenting culturally rooted Japanese dance through embodied, non-verbal expression.

The collective’s work is grounded in traditional Japanese dance practices, including movement principles drawn from classical dance, folk traditions, and ritual performance. Through physical expression rather than spoken language, Edamovement Lab explores Japanese folklore, belief systems, and cultural narratives, using the body as the primary medium of storytelling.

A defining feature of their performances is non-verbal storytelling, an essential element of traditional Japanese performing arts. Through carefully structured movement, costuming, and stage composition, the group communicates culturally specific themes while remaining accessible to international audiences.

Their repertoire includes original stage works and festival performances, most notably The Seven Gods, inspired by the Shichifukujin and incorporating traditional materials such as tenugui and furoshiki. Edamovement Lab actively presents this culturally unique work within New York’s multicultural arts scene, introducing authentic Japanese dance traditions to global audiences.
