About this Event

Activity Level: Moderate physical activity, performing lifting, bending, and walking on rough or uneven terrain.

Audience: New and veteran volunteers!

Description: Join Friends of the Fells for our first volunteer orientation to kick off the season! Whether you’re a new or returning volunteer, spend a day learning more about the Middlesex Fells, Friends of the Fells, and getting hands-on stewardship and restoration experience.

The program will begin with an interactive and educational lecture covering the history and ecology of the Fells, Friends of the Fells’ conservation projects, volunteer safety, and more.

Volunteers will have the chance to connect and participate in both trail work and invasive plant removal led by Charlie McCabe, Maddie Morgan, and Andrea Robles.

We’ll be doing outdoor work, so please wear closed-toed shoes, pants, long socks, and long sleeves to reduce exposure to ticks or poison ivy.

We also highly recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, and full reusable water bottles.

The schedule for the day follows:

10:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Educational Lecture and Conversation

11:30 AM - 12:30 PM - Field Work Session 1

12:30 PM - 1:30 PM - Lunch

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM - Field Work Session 2

2:30 PM - 3:00 PM - Discussion and Wrap-up

Location: We’ll meet at the Whip Hill Conservation Center in Stoneham, MA. We encourage folks to carpool, take public transit, or use rideshares if possible. Please arrive early, as parking spots can fill up quickly. Parking can be found at the Whip Hill Parking Lot and directly next to the Whip Hill building.

Questions: Please contact [email protected] or call 781-662-2340 if you have any questions.

Dogs: While we love experiencing the outdoors with our dogs, this program is not suitable for dogs. We ask that you please leave your furry friends home while attending this program.
