The VOCA Chorus of Toronto is looking forward to presenting "When Music Sounds" at 7:30 pm on Saturday, May 2 at our new concert venue, Eglinton St. George's (ESG) United Church.

Our performance will feature a variety of powerful, serene and lively selections that evening, including works by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo and Canadians Sarah Quartel, Mark Sirett, Katharine Petkovski, Stephanie Martin, Jenny Crober and Sherryl Sewepagaham.

Three striking Ola Gjeilo selections with string quartet will be featured: the thrilling and epic Dark Night of the Soul (also with piano), his enchanting The Lake Isle (also with acoustic guitar and piano) and the sublime Sacred Heart (Ubi Caritas III). We'll be featuring another gorgeous setting of The Lake Isle of Innisfree (for choir and piano) by London, Ontario's Sarah Quartel, along with two works by Kingston's Mark Sirett: his dynamic Barter (with string quartet and piano) and his heartwrenching Hold On.

We'll also be performing two powerful works accompanied by frame drum, yôtin (The Wind) and nipîy (Water Song) by Edmonton-area Cree composer Sherryl Sewepagaham, as well as a serene a cappella setting of My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose by Toronto's Stephanie Martin, featuring tenor soloist David Walsh. Also included will be our concert's namesake: the exquisite When Music Sounds by another Toronto composer, Katharine Petkovski. Artistic director Jenny Crober's spirited tenor bass setting of the traditional Irish tune The Star of the County Down will also be featured (accompanied by fiddles, mandolin, guitar and piano), as will Elizabeth Alexander's Appalachian-flavoured soprano/alto Faith is the bird that feels the light.

Five fabulous and versatile guest artists will be joining us: acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter , and string quartet members and , violin/fiddle, , viola, mandolin and, cello.

Guest guitarist Jason Fowler will be performing solo works that evening, and our string quartet will be featuring traditional Irish tunes arranged by Alex Cheung.
