Join elders from the Little Bahamas/Coconut Grove community as they share stories of growing up in the Grove.
Get ready to step into a world of cultural richness and vibrant heritage at "Vizcaya Late: Little Bahamas" on Wednesday, February 12, 2025. From 6 to 9 pm, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens transforms into a lively celebration of the Bahamian spirit, set in the picturesque backdrop of Miami's Biscayne Bay.
Connect with History and Heritage:
-Engage with the rich narratives of Black Coconut Grove's elders, unveiling the tapestry of their lives and the legacy of South Florida's historic neighborhood.
-Be the first to hear and watch Season 2 of "The Rich and Forgotten History of Black Coconut Grove Podcast" a series of 4 episodes, including first-person stories about the community from its inception through the mid-late 1900s.

Artistic Expressions:
-Explore Women of Washington Avenue , by Valerie Patterson. Women of Washinton Avenue is a mixed-media collage, textile, and fiber art exhibition that commemorates and celebrates the lives of ten (10) women who were neighbors from 1926 – 1976 on Washington Avenue in the Black Grove, now Little Bahamas of Coconut Grove. This project uses mixed media art to preserve and document the history and impact of the intersection of migration, race, class, gender, citizenship, education, leadership and empowerment, in the lives of each woman who either arrived in the United States from the Bahamas, early in the 20th century, or were the daughters (granddaughters and great granddaughter) of those women. The exhibit explores the ways in which a sense of family was created among the women. Collage tells their stories, capturing their individual and collective beauty and impact. This exhibit explores the possibilities and potential of the use of art to identify Bahamian ways of knowing embedded in the experiences of these women, connected by geography, race, shared culture, faith and community-building (as Ubuntu).

The Grove, through their own eyes:
- LittleBahamasMiami.com In 2024, Florida International University received an American Folklife Center Community Curation Grant to document the celebration of the Goombay festival in Coconut Grove. Photographs, videos and oral histories captured during Goombay 2024 will be preserved as a permanent digital collection in the Library of Congress. To celebrate the rich history of not only Goombay but also the communities of Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, the FIU team secured additional funds to create a website that will bring together photographs, documentary films and oral histories that are spread across multiple collections in South Florida and beyond. We invite you to explore littlebahamasmiami.com Our goal is to continue to grow and develop this site as there are undoubtably stories that remain to be told. If you have a story you'd like to share, please do contact us!
Savor the Flavors and Views:
-Indulge in an array of culinary delights with the after-hours menu at the Café and Shop, offering drinks and light bites.
-Enjoy a drink from our pop-up bar on the East Terrace, offering breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, perfect for a relaxed evening under the stars.
