Every great theater starts with a story. Join José Rochel, founder of Teatro Inovarte, as he shares his journey of transforming a vision into Chicago’s first Spanish musical theater nonprofit. Learn how to build your ensemble, become a 501(c)(3), create a strong board, and secure grants to sustain your artistic dreams.

This workshop is especially helpful for those looking to establish a theater company, secure nonprofit status, and begin applying for grants.

Content and Working format:
This interactive workshop combines personal storytelling, practical guidance, and step-by-step strategies. Participants will:
- Learn the process of starting an ensemble and building trust.
- Understand how to incorporate as a nonprofit and apply for 501(c)(3) status.
- Explore how to recruit and manage a Board of Directors.
- Gain tools for writing and securing grants.
- Participate in Q&A and group discussion to address real challenges.
The format will include a presentation with slides, real examples from Teatro Inovarte’s journey, and space for questions and dialogue with participants.

About Jose Rochel:
José Rochel is the founder and president of Teatro Inovarte, the first Spanish musical theater in Chicago. With more than 40 years of experience in folkloric and contemporary dance, he was a member of the prestigious Amalia Hernández Folkloric Dance Company of Mexico and holds a degree in Mexican Folkloric Dance Research from the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA).
In Chicago, José has worked as an actor, stage director, choreographer, and producer, collaborating with ensembles such as Colectivo El Pozo and Repertorio Latino Theater Company. His artistic contributions include both stage performance and behind-the-scenes roles in costume design, makeup, props, and set design and direction assistant.
In 2024, José founded Teatro Inovarte with co-founder Pachy Felix which quickly became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Under his leadership, Inovarte has built a committed board of directors, secured grants, and launched original productions, including Contra Ritmo, Chicago’s first Spanish-language musical. Beyond the stage, José is dedicated to community building, arts education, and mentoring the next generation of Latino artists.
