On Sunday 28th April, the renowned pianist Denis Kozhuhkin, First Prize Winner of the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition, will present a solo recital at Dubai Opera Studio in a concert presented under the patronage of the Embassy of Switzerland to the UAE & Kingdom of Bahrain, and under the auspices of the Embassy of Belgium to the United Arab Emirates, as part of the VIP Classical concert series, organised by SAMIT Event Group. Showcasing the full breadth of his vast talents, the evening opens with the Piano Sonata No. 2 by contemporary composer Alexey Shor, a work in three movements that expounds Shor’s trademark neoclassical approach, maintaining the primacy of lyricism and melody while exploring its themes with a decidedly modern viewpoint. Next come three of Émile Jaques-Dalcroze’s famous Dances – namely the No. 10, No. 11, No. 12 – followed by Sergei Prokofiev’s 1935 Music for Children, Op.65, an enchanting suite of 12 short pieces that masterfully captures the innocence, joy, and spirit of childhood through a set of musical miniatures. Following the interval, the maestro turns to Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen, Op. 15, a set of thirteen charming pieces written in 1838 that have been described as “a touching tribute to the eternal, universal memories and feelings of childhood from a nostalgic adult perspective”. The pianist will then close with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Children’s Album, Op. 39. Continuing one of the evening’s main themes, this cycle of 24 pieces composed in 1878 was originally inspired by Schumann’s Kinderszenen, with Tchaikovsky stating that he wished “to make a small contribution [of my own] to the stock of children's musical literature”.
