Joni Mitchell / The Hissing of Summer Lawns
The vinyl sessions finally alights upon a record by the estimable Joni Mitchell and no, it’s not Blue. On this, her seventh album, Mitchell embraced avant-garde soundscapes (check the looped and distorted Drummers of Burundi sample and parping synth that run throughout ‘The Jungle Line’), jazz-rock chord progressions and shimmering guitar textures that would do much to inform the likes of Cocteau Twins and others a decade later. Mitchell’s voice was still as warm, clear and enveloping as ever, but also angrier, directing barbed lyrics at the massed ranks of the patriarchy, including the male musicians and songwriters who were her professional peers at the time. Join us as we dissect a record that was remarkably forward-thinking upon its release, and remains an arresting listen to this day.
The album playback will be followed by a Q&A session.
After a short break, we'll follow the album with our usual ‘Dead Wax’ session. Bring along a vinyl disc of your choice and hear a track from it played through the Arts Centre PA. This can be anything you like, for any reason – the more ‘out there’ the better.
