About this Event

This course supports students in the creation of an original, sustainable premise for a television series. Using examples from existing TV series, students learn how to pitch, create series bibles and write outlines for original pilot episodes and a second episode of their pilot concept. Students study pilot scripts and watch TV pilot screenings in order to identify key concepts and techniques that will assist them in the development of pilot episodes for their original TV series.


Course Details:

Dates: January 20 to March 3, 2026

Duration: 7-week course, one class per week (On-Campus)

Time: Tuesdays, 5:30PM to 7:30PM (Vancouver Time Zone PST)

Cost: $500


Learning Outcomes – Participants Will:

• Prepare for the reality of working collaboratively as members of a story department.

• Identify dramatic television structure, character development, and effective dialogue.

• Demonstrate how to write a detailed outline of a pilot episode and second episode of an original TV series.

• Apply key concepts and techniques of television writing to the creation and development of an original pilot episode for a sustainable television series.

• Identify the specific characteristics of a pilot script.

• Perform the duties of a story editor during the process of workshopping scripts.

• Practice story editing skills through a simulated working story department.

• Demonstrate how to write quickly and professionally under the pressure of tight deadlines.


Requirements:

  • Laptop or Tablet, something to have near the end of the course with a writing software like Drama Queen.
  • Notebook and a pen.


Prerequisites:

Students are not required to have any previous training or experience.


* Upon successful completion of a Short-Track course, the cost can be deducted from any full-time Advanced Production program tuition at VFS. Only one discount may be applied. Contact a VFS Advisor for eligibility.


**Students must confirm they are at least 16 years old at the beginning of the workshop in order to register, and are comfortable with understanding, writing and speaking in English.
