VFS Sound Design Weekend Workshop: Step into the world of professional sound design in this immersive, hands-on weekend workshop at Vancouver Film School’s Sound Design campus. Over two intensive days, participants will learn how audio brings film and animation to life—using the same tools and techniques found in the industry.

June 27, Day 1: Sound Design & Creative Audio Tools
Participants will dive into Pro Tools, the industry-standard audio platform, to edit and design sound effects for a VFS animation project.You’ll explore powerful creative tools including:
- Vacuum – a subtractive synthesizer for crafting unique textures and tones
- Kontakt – a professional sampler used across film, TV, and games
Students will also experiment with time-based audio processing, including Doppler-style effects, to create dynamic movement and realism in their sound design.
June 28, Day 2: Foley Recording & Final Mix
Day two takes you into VFS’s professional foley recording studios, where participants will record footsteps, props, and custom sound effects in sync with picture—just like working foley artists.In the afternoon, students will bring their projects into our main mixing theatre to complete a fully automated final mix. Key topics include:
- Advanced automation techniques
- 5.1 surround sound panning
- Music mixing for film
- Creative use of reverb, delay, and subharmonic processing
Requirements:
- Have a love of sound and a desire to tell entertaining stories.
Prerequisites:
Students are not required to have any previous training or experience.February
