Join us for a fun day of diving for fossilized shark’s teeth, bones, stingray barbs/teeth, and more! Venice Beach is the self-proclaimed, “Shark Tooth Capital of the World!”Ten million years ago when Florida was underwater, the area was surrounded by sharks. When the land was eventually uncovered, so was their teeth. Storms and waves eventually pushed the fossils along the coast and onto the beach and into shallow waters with a fossil layer running 18 to 35 feet deep. As an inlet, Venice is also surrounded by freshwater rivers including the Peace River and the Myakka River that empty fossils from freshwater and other waterways in the US into the area. This means that not only are fossils there that have been there for millions of years, but they also aren’t running out anytime soon.
Adventure Outfitters has found hundreds of sharks’ teeth, ranging from bull sharks, to lemon sharks, to tiger sharks, to megladons! We also have found rare prehistoric horse teeth, dolphin teeth, sloth claws, and rostrum spines. While collecting teeth, you may also come across baby bat fish, sea robins, lizard fish and sea hares. We have even spotted manatees along the shoreline!
