Lobotomy Room is the FREE monthly film club downstairs at Fontaine’s bar in Dalston devoted Bad Movies for Bad People, specialising in the kitsch, the cult and the queer! And on Thursday 22 January, we’re screening sentimental favourite Valley of the Dolls (1967)! (Note that the Lobotomy Room film club is normally third Thursday of every month, but Fontaine’s will be closed on 15 January!).
Before Mommie Dearest ... before Showgirls ... the original “What the hell were they thinking?” Bad Movie We Love was show business cautionary tale Valley of the Dolls. A perennial touchstone for drag queens and a cult classic for connoisseurs of kitsch, sound-tracked by the haunting and ethereal Dionne Warwick theme song (which you hear over and over and over again), the unintentionally hilarious and wildly entertaining film adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s scandalous 1966 bestseller took the already lurid source material – and went even trashier with it! (Perhaps unsurprisingly, an enraged Susann called the film “a piece of sh*t”!).
So why not throw on a bouffant wig, order a stiff drink from the bar and strap yourselves in for a wild ride when Lobotomy Room presents Valley of The Dolls on 22 January! Think 123 spellbinding minutes of teased hair, bouffant wiglets, mood swings, mink coats, love affairs, emotional meltdowns, cat fights, pill-popping, abortions, drug overdoses, nervous breakdowns, terminal illness, rehab, drunkenness, and slaps across the face. (Drag comedian Jackie Beat summarizes VoD as “bitches in wigs!”). And anticipate dialogue like THIS: “Boobies. Boobies. Boobies. Nothin’ but boobies. Who needs ‘em?” “It was NOT a nuthouse!” “Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!” “You know how bitchy f**s can be!” “Neely, you’re being obnoxious!” “The only hit that comes out of a Helen Lawson show is Helen Lawson, and that's me, baby, remember?” “I’m not nutty! I’m just hooked on dolls!”
Numbers are limited, so reserve your seat via Fontaine’s site https://www.fontaines.bar/events/ Alternatively, phone 07718000546 or email [email protected]. (Note that Fontaine’s is shut until mid-January, so don’t anticipate a response right away!).
