About the event:
Designing for video games is very different from designing an app or a website. Especially if you design for a 160x144 px resolution. We will dive into the world of video game UX design with two talks and a lot of time for networking:
Inside Game UX: A Designer’s Role, Up Close and in Practice (Dina Elaraby)
What does a UX designer actually do in the games industry? This talk offers an insider look at the role — the tools, the mindset, and the unique challenges that set game UX apart from traditional product design.
Dina is a multidisciplinary designer with a background in architectural design, whose path naturally led into UX. She has built her UX experience across a range of industries — from museums and the cultural sector to energy planning and most recently, games.

Pocket Collection – a retro gaming console compendium for Nintendo Game Boy. Project Breakdown. (Meik Mense-Koch)
Perhaps you are like me – a little nerdy with a big heart for retro gaming devices. I wanted to feed my fad in a more active manner than just collecting and playing. So I created an application for Nintendo Game Boy with GB Studio. It’s a retro gaming console compendium called “Pocket Collection”.
In my talk I will break down my journey from idea to yet-to-be-finished product. We’ll take a look at creating software for old hardware and all its limitations from a modern UI design perspective. You’ll be able to take a look at retro device pixel art, test the app, give feedback and print your favorite retro console on a Game Boy Printer.
Meik is a Digital Product Designer at Factorial in Hamburg. For over 18 years he’s been shaping digital experiences and designed user interfaces for websites, applications and even washing machines. What interests him isn’t just the surface, but also what lies beneath: the problem that needs solving, and the logic that holds a system together. He takes new technologies seriously because they change how people interact with machines. But he has an equal soft spot for technology that’s been around for a long time because it is proof that someone got it right.
