Friday, March 27th 10:00am-1:00pm. Pelican Park Brown Pelican Gym.At this training, attendees will learn the best practices of nest monitoring, how to get involved as a volunteer nest monitor for the Pelican Park Nature Club, and how to bring the Urban Native Greens program to your own backyard! We will capture, band, and release birds as a part of this program. The training and bird banding will be done by Dr. Erik Johnson, PhD, and Chloe St. Germain-Vermillion, Audubon Delta Bird Technician.
Urban Native Greens is a community science project that explores links between human-induced changes in land cover and the urban-suburban ecosystem while evaluating wildlife health impact as it is relevant to environmental quality and influence on human health.
As representative bird species, Audubon Delta has selected the Purple Martin, Prothonotary Warbler, Carolina Wren, and Carolina Chickadee as focal species. Suppose you would like to monitor nests of these species around your home or one of our study sites. In that case, you must become familiar with the orientation materials, protocols, and data entry platform. Nests should be checked twice a week from mid-March through July for Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, and Prothonotary Warblers or once a week from mid-March through June for Purple Martins.
