This series of classes has been created by Doreen Ooi to specifically empower beginners of Contact Improvisation (CI), so new joiners of the form can have fun and feel safe dancing in and out of contact during a Contact Jam.
All sessions will blend the learning and investigation of core physical skills, sensitivity and awareness, and explore different states of being.
Each week, a different topic will be explored, and are structured to build thematically upon one another.
We highly recommend attending all three classes to offer a progressive learning journey. However, drop-ins are also warmly welcomed:
- January 8th: Exploring different ways of meeting
- January 15th: Entering & exiting dances
- January 22nd: Expanding beyond two

Dancehouse in Carlton, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Upstairs Studio.
PRICE:
· $15 - $20 per class
· $40 - $50 for all three classes
ABOUT DOREEN:
Doreen Ooi has been deeply immersed in Contact Improvisation since 2022, dancing and exploring the form in vibrant CI communities across major cities including New York, Cologne, Paris and London.
She is a co-host of the Monthly Melbourne Underscore and a co-founder of Øsmøsis, a project dedicated to hosting bimonthly workshops that integrate CI with nature and diverse movement practices.
Doreen's passion for CI seeds from its boundless potential to explore the physics of the body and varied states of being and perception. This series marks her debut in formally teaching Contact Improvisation, and will be supported during the sessions by her mentor Martin Hughes, who has been a teacher of CI for more than 30 years and an integral part of the Melbourne CI community.
