Description: Join us for a short film screening of Sheryl Sandberg's documentary "Screams Before Silence" and a thought-provoking conversation between Dr. Miri Bar Halpern and Anila Ali on sexual assault, trauma, and the silence of feminist organizations in the aftermath of October 7.
Anila Ali is a Pakistani-American civil rights advocate, educator, and philanthropist dedicated to challenging stereotypes and empowering women. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Anila's great-grandfather served as Prime Minister of Kashmir, and her grandmother was the first elected female parliamentarian in India. Ali is the co-founder and president of the American Muslim and Multifaith Women's Empowerment Council (AMMWEC), an organization promoting interfaith dialogue and women's leadership. She is also a retired public school teacher in California and co-authored, "Mommy, Am I...?", a children's book addressing tolerance and diversity.
Dr. Miri Bar Halpern is a trauma expert, clinician, and Harvard Medical School lecturer. She is the Director of trauma services at Parents for Peace and the Director of intensive outpatient care at Boston Child Study Center. An author and speaker, she has developed treatment manuals, therapy programs, and training seminars, including the book Becoming a Superhero: A Book For Children Who Have Been Exposed to Trauma. Since October 7, 2023, she has led mental health support for the Israeli community and trained clinicians in Israel. She also co-hosts the podcast Our Stories Matter: We Will Dance Again, through Trauma Informed LA, an initiative aimed at dismantling false narratives and promoting unity on college campuses, fostering a safe and inclusive academic environment for all students.
