About this Event
It is vital that Carers are given the knowledge and skills they need to help children and young people through the complexities of understanding trauma and/or abuse and supporting their recovery. This session has been developed to support Carers who look after children and adolescents who have been impacted by trauma. This trauma may include a range of stressful experiences which are typically chronic and interpersonal, and which may affect many different areas of a child or adolescent’s life.
A trauma is a psychologically distressing event that is outside the range of usual human experience. It often involves a sense of intense fear, terror, and helplessness.
Trauma is ‘everyone’s business’ and we all have a role to play in understanding and responding to those affected by trauma. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs to be a trauma expert —we know that different expertise and skills are required to support people’s recovery — but it does mean that all carers have a unique and essential trauma informed role to play in responding to children in their care who are affected by trauma.
AIM
To gain better knowledge and understanding of trauma and supporting recovery and how these are relevant to the health and wellbeing of care experienced children and young people.
OBJECTIVES
- To improve your understanding of why trauma and supporting recovery are so important to support you and the health of those in your care.
- To be better able to support children and young people in your care and help them access appropriate services when needed.
- To improve your ability to identify signs of trauma in the behaviour of a child or young person.
