Understanding Mental Health: A Training for Community Health Workers

This training takes place Wednesday- Friday from March 12th-14th & March 19th-21st from 12:30pm-4:00pm.

Thanks to Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Prevention (HPCDP), ORCHWA can offer this training at a subsidized rate of $125.00. ORCHWA members will receive an additional 15% off of this already subsidized training.

This statewide virtual training will dive deep into the world of mental health! This training is specifically designed for community health workers looking to expand their knowledge and skills in supporting communities with mental health challenges- all while staying within the scope of practice. Join us for insightful discussions, practical tips, and interactive sessions that will equip participants to make a positive impact in the community they serve. This is an opportunity for CHWs to enhance their understanding of mental health and improve their ability to provide effective, evidence-based support. Our facilitators will cover topics such as epigenetics and the brain; common mental health diagnoses and symptoms; trauma-informed, safety-first referral techniques; and a historical overview of mental health to date.

This training will have the required suicide prevention hours necessary for OHA recertification.

Some goals of this training include:

  • Attendees will examine mental health across the lifespan.
  • The CHW will understand the effects of trauma on health and well-being across generations & apply the principles of Trauma Informed Care.
  • Understand the role of CHW in connecting community members to pathways to recovery and role of protective factors in supporting mental health.
  • The CHW will understand the role of CHWs in suicide prevention and practice talking about suicide to community members.
  • Understand the importance of self-care for CHW well-being to model and promote self-care within the community and enhance their effectiveness as CHWs.

We utilize popular education in all of our trainings and aim to have a highly engaging and interactive experience in the virtual classroom. We use Zoom, Kahoot, Padlet, and Google Forms- please make sure your device is able to connect to these platforms. If you need any technological accommodations beyond closed captioning, please reach out, and we will do what we can to create an accessible training environment for you.
