About this Event
On Saturday 5/16, 8-9:45pm (doors 7:30), Broken Toys presents "Waterworks" and Piper Amphora presents a preview of "Underground and Underwater" at Secret Theatre for Long Island City Arts Open 2026.
Both shows look at the history of NYC and its waterways involving hundreds of shadow puppets and large artworks and performers.Broken Toys are Alice Cohen (artist and musician) and Stephanie Wuertz (artist and filmmaker), a collaborative shadow puppet duo formed in 2024. Their playful, improvisatory performances incorporate 100s of handmade puppets and hand cut outs (in the manner of Lotte Reiniger) alongside a cast of other curious inanimate objects using handheld light to produce a series of transformations and illusions. For LIC Arts Open 2026, they will present a new 45 minute extravaganza, "Waterworks" at 8pm (doors 730pm) at Secret Theatre, with music by Dominika Mazurova.https://www.broken-toys.com/
Piper Amphora are Sally Twin (artist, curator, performer) and Heather Piper (artist and puppeteer). Their Tarot Parade Arcana Crawl for 2025 LIC Arts Open drew hundreds to the Long Island City waterfront for an illuminated night parade with dancers, harp accompaniment, and paraders on land and in boats. For LIC-Arts Open 2026 they will present a preview of their new work in progress, "Underground and Underwater" at Secret Theatre right after Broken Toys performs. This will involve enormous batiks, performers, props, puppetry with video which celebrates and investigates the buried waterways of NYC, its original flora and fauna and the first fountains of NYC.
