Bluffton, South Carolina, played a significant role in antebellum era history due to its prominence in theLowcountry region. The town was a key center for the prosperous rice and cotton plantations that
characterized the Southern economy during that time. It was a transportation point for coastal
shipping and travelers by sea to the region, therefore a town developed around this transit point to
support travelers. Additionally, Bluffton's location along the May River made it a crucial port for
shipping agricultural goods.
