The following afternoon, Unabridged brings Detroit across the bridge with the Unabridged Backyard Barbecue. Detroit legend Moodymann joins his 3 Chairs compatriot Marcellus Pittman for a five-hour extended set under the Oakland sun. Alongside Theo Parrish, Moodymann has defined Detroit house music for over three decades.
“You truly never know what you’re going to get with a Moodymann set, but you can always count on vibes, smiles, and nonstop dancing,” says Bispo.
Bay Area support includes Nina Sol, Patrick Wilson, Space Ghost, DJ Patrick, and Infinite Jess. Sonny NVR OVR BBQ takes over the kitchen with a barbecue inspired by Moodymann’s legendary Movement Festival weekend cookouts.

Moodymann — Biography
Kenny Dixon Jr., aka Moodymann, is one of house music’s most enigmatic and influential figures. A Detroit original, he has consistently championed the Black roots of techno and house while rejecting the press-and-promo machine. Known for his masterful sampling of soul, blues, jazz, and gospel, Moodymann’s sound is raw, dusty, deeply emotional, and unmistakably his own.
From seminal releases on Planet E, Peacefrog, and his own KDJ and Mahogani Music imprints, to timeless classics like “Sunday Morning,” “Shades of Jae,” and his remix of Innerzone Orchestra’s “People Make the World Go Round,” his work has earned him legendary status. Albums such as Silentintroduction, Moodymann (2014), Sinner (2019), and Taken Away showcase an artist in constant evolution—never rushed, never explained, always rooted in soul.
Outspoken and uncompromising, Moodymann remains a vital voice in electronic music, fiercely committed to preserving its heritage while keeping the mystery intact.
Marcellus Pittman — Biography
When other children were playing combat with G.I. Joe action figures in the early 80’s, Detroit native Marcellus “Malik” Pittman was playing his radio at maximum volume, listening to the sounds of “the Wizzard” and the “Electrifying Mojo”, in addition to the jazz outputs of Rosetta Hines.
Malik began his DJ pursuits for college parties, wedding receptions, “old school parties” in the early 90’s. In 1993, Malik released his initial work of production with local Hip-Hop collective “Home Grown”.
Shortly thereafter, he released “Essential Selections, Vol. 1” on the Sound Signature label, headed by Theo Parrish. In 1998, Malik forged a working relationship with Rick Wilhite, Theo Parrish and Kenny “Moodymann” Dixon, collectively known as the 3 Chairs. As production artists and selectors, they have helped to define an integral part of the Detroit sound.Malik’s sound has been around the Detroit and surrounding areas, as well as internationally, spanning Canada, the UK, Germany, Japan and Paris.
His dedication to production ushered the discontinuation of his latest residency with Northern Lights in Detroit. Malik is currently heading his own label, Unirhythm, which will release his upcoming projects.
