About this Event
Join us for a powerful introduction to Sergiy Adamenko (Patrick)—a Ukrainian writer, volunteer, and former combatant whose life journey bridges war, philosophy, and literature.
Born in Donbas, Adamenko took part in shaping independent Ukraine and later defended it on the front lines as a member of the First Separate Assault Company of the DUK PS under Dmytro Kotsiubailo (“Da Vinci”).
His literary path began with "Heroes of Modernity", a tribute to volunteers who stood up for their country. The book later reached international audiences as "Slaves Are Not Allowed into Heaven". He continued with the "Infinity" trilogy—"Flight of the Butterfly", "The Look of the Raven", and "Step of the Wolf"—exploring profound themes such as eternity, reincarnation, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Now based in Ireland, Adamenko continues to write and inspire while raising four children.
We are honoured to welcome Sergiy Adamenko (Patrick) to Cambridge, where he will meet participants of the Ukrainian Literary Contest “White Bird”, initiated by the Ukrainian HAM Centre in Cambridge.
Sergiy Adamenko has generously agreed to dedicate his time to reviewing your original works and offering thoughtful recommendations ahead of their potential publication in a future almanac of Ukrainian-language writing. This collection will bring together voices at different stages of their literary journey—from emerging authors to those with professional training.
For Adamenko, the defence of Ukraine has never been abstract—it is a personal duty. As a combatant, he endured some of the most intense যুদ্ধ zones of the war, including Avdiivka. After returning to Ireland, where he has long lived and worked, he continued his creative path, writing in both Ukrainian and English.
His prose reflects a rare creative freedom, shaped by openness to European modern literature and enriched by his experience within Ireland’s international cultural environment. His work stands apart in contemporary Ukrainian literature through its bold blending of genres, innovative stylistic techniques, and deep engagement with social and philosophical questions.
During the meeting, Sergiy Adamenko will also present excerpts from his latest trilogy—a captivating and thought-provoking work that leaves a lasting impression.
