ABOUT THE SHOW:

Join us for an unforgettable Sunday afternoon of captivating fashions by ethno-designer Tanya Znak, featuring a runway of fashion models showcasing Ukrainian attire, embroidery and accessories, set to the remix music collaboration of live folk singer Olesia Shewchuk and music producer Nikita Shalyha.

Between fashion sets, you will be entertained by the ever-growing vibrant Barvinok Ukrainian Folk Choir conducted by Olesia Shewchuk and accompanied expertly by Elaine Joe on piano and Pavel Ryzlovsky on accordion. The show will also feature guest artists, exquisite violinist Maryna Popova, as well as composer and talented accordion player and composer Taras Luka.

Grab a refreshment or snack, explore assortments of Ukrainian crafts at the vending tables, mingle with fellow guests and make new friends.

We have chosen to donate proceeds from this event to the “Children of War” fund at the Maple Hope Foundation.

WHO IS INVOLVED:


  • BARVINOK CHOIR / Producer, Performer / @barvinokchoir

Barvinok Choir is a vibrant Ukrainian folk choir based in Vancouver. Known for its moving and lively performances, and its fun and welcoming people, Barvinok Choir is dedicated to bringing community together to celebrate, to preserve and uphold Ukrainian culture through folk music. Under its conductor Olesia Shewchuk, the choir has grown from 14 members to 35+ members in the last year and a half. The choir sings a variety of Ukrainian repertoire ranging through the centuries - from traditional Ukrainian folk songs to contemporary and pop works, often inviting guest musicians to participate for its performances. Barvinok Choir is a cultural group of the AUUC, in addition to the Dovbush Ukrainian Dance Group and the Vancouver Ukrainian Folk Orchestra, all of which are based out of the Ukrainian Hall.


  • TANYA ZNAK / Producer, Fashion Designer/ @tanyaznak

Tanya is a talented Ukrainian artist who designs ethnic clothes and embroidery. She displays her work in fashion shows in Ukraine and abroad including Poland, Spain, Greece and Canada and has designed costumes for Regina’s "Tavria” Folk Dance Ensemble. With careful consideration of the history of Ukrainian costume and embroidery, she creates stunning modern clothes and ornaments that reflect the different regions of Ukraine. Tanya graduated with Bachelor and Masters degrees from the Lviv Academy of Art after graduating from the College of Decorative and Applied Arts specializing in embroidery and clothing modelling.

Since the beginning of the war, Таnya has been actively promoting Ukrainian art in Europe and Canada. In Vancouver, presentations of her ethnic clothing have been presented at Vyshyvnanka Day (Art Gallery Square), a charity “Gala Dinner for Ukraine” (Vancouver Club), and for volunteer projects such as “Ukrainian Identity” and “Ukrainian Christmas” (Ukrainian Canadian Congress) raising funds for Ukraine. Her art can also be seen currently at the “Vytynanka” Exhibit at Plaskett Gallery at Massey Theatre.

In order to pass on her skills and knowledge to future generations, Tanya also conducts master art classes for children and adults, and hosts weekly “Ukrainian evening parties” where she teaches Ukrainian children and women to embroider and draw.


  • OLESIA SHEWCHUK / Producer, Singer, Conductor of Barvinok Choir / @olesia_shewchuk

Olesia is an actress, singer & filmmaker with an extensive background in dance, music composition and piano. She also conducts and arranges music for the Barvinok Folk Choir. Olesia performs regularly as a singer, including recently as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s “Tribute to Ukraine”, The National Ballet of Ukraine, The New Westminster Symphony Orchestra, & City Opera Vancouver’s “Ukrainochka” recital. On TV, she has been in roles on Netflix, NBC, Fox, TLC, ABC, Bravo, Freeform, CW, and Global. Onstage, she has performed in 24 theatre shows and musicals throughout the Pacific Northwest. Olesia grew up immersed in the Ukrainian language & culture, including singing and touring Ukrainian folk music regularly with her sister in a duet ensemble, teaching and choreographing Ukrainian dance, dancing with the Rusalka Dance Ensemble, and leading groups of campers in Ukrainian song with her guitar around bonfires every summer.


  • TARAS LUKA / Accordion Player, Composer / @taras.luka

Ukrainian jazz and classic accordionist, composer and arranger. He graduated from the Odesa National Music Academy (Ukraine), receiving a master’s degree in music. During his musical career, he wrote a lot of original music for the accordion and more. The last of the works is a jazz album for accordion and jazz quintet called “Part of the Journey”, which was released in 2023. Taras also worked as a composer, conductor and music director in the theater for several years. He created music for two musicals, one dramatic play and worked on sound design for the theater. One of his last works was “Choral of Freedom” for symphony orchestra, choir and soprano solo (dedicated to all the children who died as a result of the war in Ukraine). The world premiere of which took place in Bologna (Italy) in Teatro Comunale de Bologna. After moving to Vancouver he actively pursues his musical career as an artist and composer. His piece has been selected for the “Hugh Davidson Composer Readings 2024” (Victoria Symphony Orchestra). In 2021, his works were nominated for two composer prizes of Ukraine (B. Lyatosshinsky and L. Revutsky). Over the past few years, he played many concerts in Europe in the cities of Germany, Italy, Poland, Greece, Moldova and Romania.
