Division of Medicine Inaugural Lecture
A Hat-Trick in Academia: Decoding Lung Cancer, Transforming Education, and Championing Inclusion
Professor Vitor Teixeira
UCL Respiratory and Education Departments
In this inaugural lecture, Professor Vitor Teixeira reflects on a career spanning lung cancer research, education, and institutional leadership. Focusing on his work in early disease mechanisms, he explores how advances in lung cancer biology can inform strategies for detection and intervention. Using the metaphor of a “hat-trick,” he explores an academic approach shaped by discovery, education, and inclusion. Emphasising research-led teaching, student-centred learning, and equality, diversity and inclusion initiatives, he reflects on how integrating these pillars can enhance both the impact and relevance of academic practice.
Professor Teixeira is Programme Director of the MSc in Respiratory Clinical Science, Tutor for Postgraduate Taught Degrees, and a Research Group Leader within the Division of Medicine. His research has made significant contributions to understanding the molecular and immunological mechanisms underpinning lung cancer progression. He previously served as Faculty of Medical Sciences Careers Lead, leading initiatives to enhance student employability and career development. A longstanding member of the Division of Medicine Athena Swan Self-Assessment Team for over a decade, he now co-leads this work, advancing equality, diversity and inclusion.
All new professors are given the opportunity to deliver an inaugural lecture. This series celebrates academic achievement, with each lecture representing a significant milestone in an academic career. Lectures are open to all UCL staff and students.
