About this Event
Join Peter Godfrey-Smith, History and Philosophy of Science Professor at the University of Sydney, for a Howison Lecture on Evolution and Animal Minds.
The lecture will begin with a brief overview of animal evolution, focusing on the emergence of felt experience, consciousness in its most minimal form, across different evolutionary lineages. The talk then turns to two key philosophical questions: Can consciousness arise gradually, existing in partial or borderline forms? And is it a unified phenomenon with a few origins and variants, or merely a cluster of loosely related traits?
This in-person event will be held at the Banatao Auditorium, Sutardja Dai Hall, on the UC Berkeley Campus and will follow evolving public health guidelines.
