About this Event
You’re invited to Uber Design Night, hosted in our Seattle Office on May 21st. You’ll get the chance to meet fellow UXers, learn about Uber’s UX team, and participate in a conversation about how Design adapts to a changing world.
Hear from Kate Powell, visual designer at Google Maps, and delve into the art of data visualization. Just as fine artists use visual elements to convey information and emotion, discover how Kate and her team use similar principles to abstract and style data. This artistic approach creates a visual language that guides us through our world, transforming raw data into a symphony of information.
Kendall Avery, research manager at Uber, will share her experience bringing a traditionally in-person UX Research method to an online format due to Covid. She'll highlight how she brought participatory design online, leveraged the insights to inform the direction of the Uber app homescreen, and highlight the ways that the method still holds value now that we're back to an in-person world.
We’ll also showcase a panel of cross-functional Uber product and design leaders in a conversation about how they partner to deliver high-quality user experiences.

Kate Powell's design journey began in a surprisingly effective UX crucible: education. There, she mastered the art of captivating even the most energetic kindergartners. That experience sparked a passion for clear communication, which lead her to design school. Honing her skills, she then crafted expressive websites and applications at Fuzzco. Now at Google Maps, she hasn’t just "colored the world"—she’s played a pivotal role in establishing the map’s first-ever design system.
Kendall Avery leads the Rider & Maps UX Research teams at Uber, managing a global team focused on enhancing user experiences that help us reimagine the way the world moves, for the better. Prior to Uber, Kendall worked as a UX researcher and Product Manager at SAP Concur, solving problems for enterprise customers and end users through travel and expense solutions. A graduate of the University of Washington's Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) program, Kendall brings a holistic approach to UX research, blending academic knowledge with real-world experience.
