New to musicals? Check out the short descriptions below:
Hamilton: Written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, this show follows the early life of Alexander Hamilton and his journey from being a poor orphan in the Caribbean to becoming the right-hand man of George Washington during (and after) the American Revolution. The musical captures core themes of the power of love, family, and friendship.
Wicked: With music by Stephen Schwartz, Wicked tells a complex story of two witches, Elphaba and Galinda, from The Wizard of Oz. Elphaba is treated as an outcast because of her green skin, becoming the Wicked Witch of the West. In contrast, because of her conventional beauty and charm, Galinda becomes Glina, the Good Witch of the South. Throughout their adventures, the two become dear friends. Wicked explores themes of friendship and overcoming prejudice, teaching us to look beneath the surface of every story.
Six: Written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, Six narrates the life of Henry VIII’s six wives. With the intention of forming a singing group, the wives describe their lives at the hands of Henry VIII. The queen who suffered the most will win the coveted prize of lead singer in their group. Eventually, they decide they’re best when they stick together. The musical explores core themes of female empowerment and sacrifice.
Newsies: Written by Harvey Flerstein, Newsies tells a story about New York City paper boy, Jack Kelly. The story follows the struggle him and his two new workmates face after a newspaper publisher sets new rules to make it harder to earn money. A powerful scene from this musical is when the three workmates unite in a song and stand up for their rights.
Shrek: Written by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek follows the story of Shrek, a hulking green ogre, who had been bullied and feared his whole life. All that Shrek wanted was a life of peace and quiet at his swamp. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for him, he has to face several challenges related with living in a world full of annoying fairy tale characters and rules. His strive for solitude is hilariously met through a winding set of chaos around him.
