Santa Cruz Fire invites the public to join us for a "Push-In Ceremony" to commemorate putting into service the new Type 6 Engine on Wednesday, March 11, at 11:00 am, at Santa Cruz Fire Station 61, located at 711 Center St. The new Type 6 Engine “Push In” will be the first Type 6 Engine for the City of Santa Cruz Fire Department. “The addition of our first Type 6 engine significantly strengthens our wildfire and all-hazard response capability,” says Santa Cruz Fire Chief Rob Oatey. “The mobility and rapid deployment features of the engine allows us to access hard-to-reach areas and improve initial attack effectiveness, enhancing safety for both our firefighters and the community.”
In addition to the ceremonial "Push-In," community members are invited to enjoy complimentary refreshments, fire department giveaways, and fire safety information on keeping their homes and families safe.
The "Push-In Ceremony" is a fire service tradition that pays tribute to firefighters in the 1800s who used horse-drawn equipment and physically pushed fire engines into the bays after returning from a fire.
“This engine was made possible through federal funding secured by Congressman Panetta and his team,” Chief Oatey added. “We are grateful for their support in helping us better protect Santa Cruz from growing wildfire risks.”
The Type 6 Engine is based at Fire Station 61 downtown, which is the most central location for calls for service.
All community members and the media are invited to attend this renewed tradition for the Santa Cruz Fire Department
