In the Amazon’s Tapajós River basin, the Munduruku people of Sawré Muybu defend their traditional territory from the relentless threat of illegal mining and logging. When the state fails to take action, community leaders rise to resist invasion and protect the rainforest as a living archive of their ancestral knowledge and memory.
Synopsis:
Travel deep into Brazil’s Tapajós River basin to Sawré Muybu, where the Munduruku people inhabit a world of spiritual and ancestral connection with the forest, waters, and birds. For generations, their people have endured systematic colonial violence through missionary rule and the prohibition of language, ritual, and spiritual practice. Today, the Munduruku face the relentless onslaught of industrial resource extraction. Illegal logging ravages the rainforest and gold mining poisons the Tapajós River with mercury. This violence threatens the survival of the people and the sanctity of their territory—a living archive of Munduruku dreams and culture.
Katô follows Munduruku and allied Indigenous leaders in a decades-long struggle to protect their communities and the greater Amazon. When the government fails to take action, the community undertakes self-demarcation, placing their bodies on the line to protect their territory. At the forefront stands a women-led video collective turning cameras into tools of resistance to document their lived experience of invasion and violence. By reclaiming Katô, the dark black, ancestral soils of the Amazon, the Munduruku affirm the land as a living witness to their history and a source of belonging.
