- In the United States, about 23% of people living with HIV are women and, in 2021, women made up 20 percent of new diagnoses, according to CDC data.
- In 2022, Black women were 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than non-Hispanic white women.
- Black women account for the largest share of new HIV diagnoses and all women living with HIV.
- HIV testing can lead to prevention services, such as PrEP, and treatment.
National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is observed annually on March 10. This day aims to raise awareness about HIV among women and girls, promote testing, treatment, and prevention efforts, and reduce disparities in the affected populations.

Texas Black Women’s Health Initiative (TxBWHI) is a collective, regionally located team created to mobilize with the focus on HIV education, prevention, and care retention by influencing policy, systems, programs, projects, cultures, and practices to reduce HIV-related disparities in communities of Black women.
The Texas Black Women’s Health Initiative (TxBWHI) vision will mobilize communities to end HIV- related disparities among Black women.
The mission of the Texas Black Women’s Health Initiative (TxBWHI) is to achieve sustainable systemic change by actively engaging and empowering Black women to address HIV disparities related to the prevention and care continuum.
