We are excited to announce that we will be hosting a turtle derby-themed 5K trail race fundraiser with our friends at Hopkins Farm Brewery on April 11th, 2026.
Turtle derbies used to be popular events that consisted of participants collecting turtles from the wild and entering them into a "race". However, these events are mostly a thing of the past due to ethical and ecological concerns for the turtles involved. Collecting turtles from the wild contributes to population declines, and having them interact with other turtles from different populations can spread diseases. Additionally, many of the turtles involved in these derbies would have their shells painted, which can harm the turtle and make them more susceptible to predators when released into the wild. We wanted to flip the turtle derby idea on its head and host an event that would raise awareness and funds for local turtle conservation efforts.
On Saturday, April 11th, 2026, we will be hosting a turtle derby-themed 5K trail race with our friends at Hopkins Farm Brewery. The goals of our race are to:
1. Raise funds for Susquehannock Wildlife Society's local wildlife conservation efforts
2. Raise awareness about turtle population declines and conservation efforts
3. Build community between local wildlife conservationists, athletes, and outdoor enthusiasts
4. Have fun running around Hopkins Farm Brewery
This family-friendly race is a great way to support a meaningful cause, have fun with friends and family, promote your health, and experience the outdoors at one of Maryland's highest-quality breweries. Walkers, joggers, and runners are welcome!
