Award-winning Canadian Documentary Director, Steven Hoffner, will deliver a 3-hour masterclass on documentary filmmaking as part of Siné Institute Industry Conference.


Event Details:

Siné Institute Industry Conference is an all-day event holding six masterclasses from industry veterans to support film makers on their journey. As part of the Siné Institute Industry Conference, Steven Hoffner will be holding a masterclass at George Brown College’s Waterfront Campus, on March 5th between 1pm and 4pm.

Through this masterclass with Steven Hoffner, attendees will learn a comprehensive, practice-driven introduction to modern documentary filmmaking that blends historical context, formal theory, and real-world production insight. Steven’s masterclass moves beyond theory into execution, covering idea development, pitching, pre-production, interviewing, shooting, editing, and ethical decision-making.

Speaker:

Steven Hoffner is an award-winning Canadian documentary director and producer with over 15 years of experience specializing in sports, culture, and character-driven nonfiction storytelling. His work spans feature documentaries, premium doc-series, and short-form editorial content for broadcast, streaming, and digital platforms.


Steven directed and produced the documentary feature The Cannons, which premiered at DOC NYC and currently airs on TSN, MSG, NESN, and Monumental Sports Network. The film was executive produced by NBA legend Russell Westbrook and Emmy-nominated producer Robert Ford. He also wrote, produced, and edited the ESPN+ and Sportsnet series NHL Trophy Case, featuring Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Auston Matthews.


Previously, Steven created and led award-winning documentary series for the National Hockey League, including NHL Life, which received seven w3 web Awards. His work has been commissioned by organizations including the NHL, Walt Disney Company, Major League Baseball, HBO, CBC, and TNT, collectively reaching millions of viewers worldwide. 


In addition to his filmmaking career, Steven served as Program Director of Film Production at the Toronto Film School, mentoring emerging filmmakers while continuing to develop premium documentary projects through his company, 383 Pictures.
