About this Event

True North Mittens - A Mitten Knitting Workshop

Learn tips and tricks for knitting mittens in the round. We will cast on the True North Mittens, a true melting pot of a mitten, representing some of the amazing fiber artists in Minnesota. Designed by local fiber artist, Alla Hale, these mittens are knit in locally grown and milled Icelandic yarn from Badgerface Fiber in Northfield, MN.

The stitch patterns are inspired by traditional Norwegian sweaters, and the finishes inspired by Latvian and Norwegian mitten designs. Together, we will work through the Latvian Braid cast on, and then we will learn how to hold yarn in both hands for two-color colorwork.

In the three-hour class you can expect to have completed the decorative cuff of one mitten. You will leave with all the knowledge and materials to finish your own pair of beautiful mittens.

Materials
For the mitten class, students should have the following materials:

1. Circular or double pointed knitting needles in a US 1.5, 2, or 3, depending on their gauge. Pattern calls for US2.

2. Snips or other way of cutting the yarn

3. Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

4. Any eyewear needed to work knitting at the assigned gauge

Yarn

The instructor will provide the following materials for a $50 materials fee:

1. Three mini-skeins of icelandic wool from Badgerface Fiber, 100 yds each ($50 value)

2. A printed copy of the mitten pattern ($6 value)

You pay the instructor directly for the materials.
