About this Event
"Sometimes dead is better." - Stephen King, Pet Sematary.
When it comes to historic walking tours, we couldn't agree with the king of horror more!
This January, with a chill in the air and a favorite horror movie in your heart, come listen to bone-chilling tales about the horrific - but true - history of Philadelphia's long-neglected Mount Vernon Cemetery (MVC). Although MVC has been closed to the public for decades, the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery, in collaboration with Girls Like Horror Film Club, will be opening its creaking iron gates to take horror fans on a unique journey through the blighted 169-year-old cemetery's mysterious and tragedy-riddled past.
As infamous author H.P. Lovecraft once said: "It is a mistake to fancy that horror is associated inextricably with darkness, silence, and solitude." Though we tour as a group during the day time this does not mean mystery and intrigue aren't lurking around every corner. For at Mount Vernon Cemetery you never know who or what is watching you. Nor do you know what you'll find hidden amongst the vines. Perhaps a fallen angel statue? A hungry fox?! Bruce Campbell??! Spoiler alert: Be prepared for the uncanny as MVC is covered in, as the New York Post declared: "creepy stuffed animals that inexplicably appear overnight." In other words... "Be afraid. Be very afraid."
This adults-only tour showcases the more macabre aspects of MVC’s history; tales of M**der, suicide, and hoodoo. And while it's unlikely these stories will "tear your soul apart" Hellrasier-style, they are guaranteed to send shivers up your spine in ways true horror fans will truly enjoy.
***MVC's True Horror Tour is reserved for members of the Girls Like Horror Film Club. Sign up to become a member at www.girlslikehorror.com
This tour is sponsored and conducted by members of the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. All admission fees and donations support the cemetery's ongoing restoration.
Content warning/Reminders:
- MVC's True Horror Tour will include discussions of an adult nature that may be distressing to some visitors. Topics include tales of M**der, suicide, death, and infant mortality via disease.
- This tour is for ADULTS ONLY. Anyone under the age of 18 will be turned away.
- Please meet at MVC's main gate. Located at the corner of Ridge and Lehigh Avenues.
- The tour will be going offroad. Regardless of weather, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable closed-toed shoes and long pants.

- MVC is in a court-appointed conservatorship. As such, all visitors will need to sign an access waiver. Paperwork will be provided upon arrival.
- All visitors are required to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the cemetery's conservators and by the Friends of Mount Vernon Cemetery. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in immediate expulsion from the grounds without refund, and you will be banned from participating in future MVC public events.
