Day 3
Set 1 – Dead Leaf Butterfly:
Lina Allemano (trumpet); Els Vandeweyer (vibraphone); Maike Hilbig (bass); Lucia Martinez (drums)
A Berlin-based quartet with international roots, these four musicians are standout figures in the city’s vibrant scene. Together, they merge their diverse personal backgrounds into a pan-European, transatlantic vision of Modern Creative Jazz.
Trumpeter Lina Allemano, who moves between Berlin and Toronto, captivates with her trio Ohrenschmaus and her artful abstractions.
Of bassist Maike Hilbig, Jazz Thing once wrote that she “knows better than almost anyone how to fuse the freedom and uncompromising spirit of free jazz with the engaging relatability of everyday life experience.”
Lucía Martínez, after receiving classical training in her native Spain and studying jazz in Portugal, completed her Master’s degree in drums and composition at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Her playing, she says, is shaped as much by classical and contemporary music as by Galician folk, flamenco, and Mediterranean influences.
Belgian vibraphonist Els Vandeweyer has expanded the instrument’s sonic spectrum in breathtaking ways. Through unconventional techniques and preparations, she creates strikingly expansive soundscapes.
Set 2 – Dan Peter Sundland (electric bass) solo
Dan Peter Sundland is a Norwegian electric bass player and composer based in Berlin. Primarily focused on improvisational music, his playing is distinguished by the use of extended techniques, expanding his instrument with a range of percussive and bowing sounds.
His compositional work includes improvisational pieces for larger ensembles, collaborations with Ensemble Mosaik, and his own 11-piece chamber ensemble, Elevenette. He is also active in smaller groups such as Home Stretch, Moneyfriends, and Idea of a Good Time.
His discography includes releases with MeoW! (featuring Jim Black, Liz Kosack, and Cansu Tanrikulu), Lina Allemano’s Ohrenschmaus (with Michael Griener), and Y (with Liz Kosack and Steve Heather). His first solo album, solo electric bass, was released in 2022.
Set 3 – Pöschl / Dörner / Gordoa:
Sunk Pöschl (drums); Axel Dörner (trumpet); Emilio Gordoa (vibraphone)
For musicians Pöschl, Dörner, and Gordoa, one thing is certain: they are committed to surrendering to the free fall of a musical idea. The fluidity of unpredictability is explored musically to its very limits. What unfolds is a journey that lingers in memory.
The trio finds fascination in playing together to investigate one particular concept: the profitability of detours.
