Day 3
Set 1 – Peepholes:
Liz Allbee (trumpet, electronics); Mat Pogo (voice); Antonio Borghini (bass); Steve Heather (drums)
A peephole, in its simplicity, contains a complex reality. Its use can be revealing on many levels: Is it an opportunity? A temptation? A threat? So much depends on what lies on the other side — and that is precisely the challenge: you don’t know.
The quartet Peepholes exists in a suspended state on both sides of this reality: it is both observer and observed, surrendering to the anticipation of discovering something hidden within itself. At times, Peepholes reveals something that has always been there, something familiar; at other times, something completely unexpected emerges. Either way – what matters is that this quartet dares to look through, ready to transform the most personal of acts into a collective one, and determined to find ways to make audible the alienation that arises when we watch ourselves being watched — through sound, rhythm, and word.
Set 2 – Antti Virtaranta (double bass) solo
Bleeps and bloops trickle the repetitive rhythms and drones from the acoustic bass. The music is based on complex manipulation of simple ideas and forms. The sound is the interaction of non-reactive, live-sample manipulation from the electronics and improvisational conversations with the bass, subtly varying the qualities of the bass's simple sounds. In the end, just an imaginary story.
Set 3 – Brad Henkel Quartet:
Brad Henkel (trumpet); Rieko Okuda (piano); Isabel Rössler (bass); Samuel Hall (drums)
Brad Henkel, previously known primarily for his work in free improvisation and electroacoustic music, now presents his debut composing for a traditional jazz quartet. The pieces draw influence from a wide range of sources – from Miles to Feldman, real-time improv to modern jazz.
The band’s distinctive sound stems from its unique lineup and the musicians’ long-standing experience of improvising together.
Joined by Rieko Okuda on piano, Isabel Rößler on double bass, and drummer Samuel Hall, Henkel’s compositions serve as a springboard for deep musical interaction and unexpected worlds of improvisation.
