Tristesse is a Berlin-based German band formed in 2019. Their music blends elements of indie rock, shoegaze, and dreampop, creating a sound characterized by spaciousness and atmospheric depth.
The band’s debut EP, “Im schwächsten Licht” (“In the Weakest Light”), was released in 2021. Their compositions feature reverb-laden vocals that intertwine with guitar chords, while drums and bass provide a grounding framework. This combination offers listeners a sense of comfort juxtaposed with moments of tension, capturing the essence of their unique sound.
In 2023, Tristesse released their album titled “Die Sonne ging unter, auch ich hatte vergessen” (“The Sun Set, I Too Had Forgotten”).

The German duo is difficult to categorize due to their extravagant stylistic leanings, blending elements of math rock, noise rock, screamo, indie, alternative, and more. An art rock label might be the most fitting, especially considering that the band’s visual aesthetic is deeply intertwined with their music. Their fashion-inspired imagery, despite some minor kitsch aspects, seamlessly complements their sound, creating a well-defined artistic impression. At first, this fusion might seem abstruse — just as it did to the observer — but over time, it begins to make sense. With some thought and several listens, the initial confusion gradually gives way to understanding, a process that awaits anyone willing to immerse themselves in their world.
