Make something you actually want to keep with Another Studio x Studio Janneke
Treasures | Trinkets | Treats
Whether you're a total newbie or you've worked with clay before but you need some inspiration, come along to this hands-on in-person workshop in South London. We'll spend two full hours making and decorating your chosen project and you'll be able to take it home once we've glazed and fired it for you.
Choose your project at checkout, and we will have all materials, instructions and templates ready for you so you can get your hands dirty right away. An experienced potter is available throughout for demonstrations, help and answers to all your questions.
CHOOSE YOUR PROJECT:
- Make a set of pet bowls for your furry flatmate. This design is easy to build, and leaves you lots of time for decoration.
- Create a couple of snack bowls or customize them to double as a picture frame, a ring dish or trinket tray. This design can be as easy or as complicated as you like, with a focus on building or on decoration - whichever you like most.
- Build your own wall hanging with space for a candle or tealight, a photo or some trinkets and incense. This design involves a lot of clay construction, so there might be a bit less time for decoration.
GOOD TO KNOW:
- Public transport: New Cross, New Cross Gate (Overground) and Deptford (trains) are the closest stations, but make sure you account for the additional walk. We love Citymapper.
- Parking: near the studio, there is CPZ (free after 5pm) and some (but not much) on-street parking. Check the Lewisham Council website for more details.
- There are spots outside to park and secure your bike, but make sure you lock it up well.
- Wear clothes you feel comfortable in and don't mind getting a little dirty. Clay washes out, but as we're working with terracotta, head-to-toe white linen might not be the best outfit.
- All projects are accessible to all levels of makers. You absolutely don't need any previous clay experience - we're just asking about it so we know the general level within a workshop group. Do let us know beforehand if you have any special needs, requirements or sensitivities, so we can make the experience the best it can be for you.
- Well(-ish) behaved dogs are welcome. No kids on this particular workshop though.
THINGS TO DO BEFOREHAND:
- Pick which of the projects you'd like to make on the night: the wall shelf, a set of pet bowls, or a set of snack / trinket trays.
- If you have a specific idea for decoration, bring along some reference images on your phone or - even better - printed or drawn out.
- Make sure you've had food (clay play is hungry work) or bring a snack and something to drink - fun drinks allowed!
- Do you have a great chill / fun evening playlist? Bring it along and we'll pop it on the speakers for some cosy background vibes.
ON THE NIGHT:
18.45 - 19.00 - walk in, meet everyone, have a drink (BYOB - feel free to pop a bottle) or a quick snack, get changed if you need to and grab a seat. This is also the right moment to sort out shipping with us, should you not be able to pick up your work once it's been fired.
19.00 - the quickest of introductions on how to get going and what to look out for when working with clay. As you've already picked the project you're working on (see below), you'll find all the materials you'll need laid out for you with templates and instructions to make sure you'll come away with something stunning regardless of experience, skill or creativity. During the first hour of the workshop you'll prep your template, cut out all your clay parts and start constructing your build. You can do this on your own without having to wait for others, and there is plenty of time for questions and one-on-one guidance.
20.00 - a quick break from making to run through some of the options for decorating. We'll be working with terracotta and white decorating slip, which offers a whole array of creative options. We'll take you through the different ways to transfer your design from the page (or your mind) to the clay: whether you want to paint freely, enjoy the tactile feel of sgraffito (carving) or prefer a more planned approach using stencils. During this hour you'll be focused on finishing your build and decorating.
20.55 - time to wrap up. Make sure you mark your work and let us know if you'd like it finished with a transparent glaze or kept unglazed. Double-check your contact details so we can let you know when your work is ready to pick up.
A FEW WEEKS LATER:
You'll get a message from us to let you know when your work has been glazed and fired. Clay takes a while to dry out fully before its first biscuit firing. After this, it will be glazed and fired again. Expect between 4-6 weeks for this - we're aiming for the end of June for the early course dates and mid-July for the later ones.
If you're unable to pick up your work from the studio (same location as the workshop), we can ship it to you at a small extra charge - usually less than £5 depending on size and destination. Please be aware that all ceramics are fragile and pick-up is the best way to guarantee nothing breaks in transit.
