About this Event
Transgender People Unearthed. The Fluidity of Gender in Ancient Times.
Speaker: Gali Jaffe (Archaeology, Gender, Tours, Talks and more)
Location: Großer Hörsaal der Anatomie OHP8, Raum 235, Otto-Hahn-Platz 8
Info: This is the story of transgender people from the distant past, based on archaeological finds and written evidence. This talk approaches transgender history with a fresh outlook, rooting its narrative in archaeological finds. The story presented here begins chronologically 5000 years ago in 3rd millennium BCE Mesopotamia, it then continues through Ancient Egypt, the Aegean, Iron Age Iran, Roman Period texts regarding gender norms, Byzantine Period transgender monks and ends with Gender in the Viking world. The culmination of the findings presented here shows that not only were there people in ancient times that we would nowadays call Transgenser people, more importantly it shows that the concept of fluidity in gender, and that gender is non-binary, were a known and accepted idea throughout all of human history.
The lecture is part of the conference "Beyond the Binary — Through an Intersectional Lens - Bodies, Visibility and Power in Medicine, Archaeology & Society" and is organised by the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence at the University of Kiel.
