Medical Gatekeeping and the History of Transidentity: Diagnosis, Control and Recognition with PD Dr. Livia Prüll
Location: Großer Hörsaal der Anatomie OHP8, Raum 235, Otto-Hahn-Platz 8
The history of transidenty is very much shaped and influenced by the medical gaze on the phenomenon. Already during the 19th century, when transident persons were detected, medicine and more exactly psychiatry were authorized to deal with them according to a strictly binary societal gender model. Since then, trans*people were pathologized and the 20th and 21st centuries are shaped by the fight of trans*people for societal acceptance and depathologization.
The talk will concentrate on the western world and will start with a definition of transidentity which gives already - among others - also hints on problems associated with historical analysis. The following subchapters will venture through the history of trans* since the end of the 18th century. It will be explained, why the 19th century is decisive for trans*hostile developments in society and why it throws its shadow until the present days. Furthermore, the talk will discuss the different factors which lead to an improvement of trans*selfconfidence and acceptance. Finally it will be discussed, how historical developments influence the societal dealings with trans* still today.
The lecture is part of the conference "Beyond the Binary — Through an Intersectional Lens Bodies, Visibility and Power in Medicine, Archaeology & Society" and is organised by the ROOTS Cluster of Excellence at the University of Kiel.
