About this Event
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
Cypriot dances are often considered to be one of the most difficult to grasp, due to their unique style. In her workshop, Yianna will take you on a historical journey into the past where you will learn about Cypriot culture and the distinct roles of men and women within Cypriot society. You will appreciate how social behaviours influenced the dances and their style, before you are introduced to the dances themselves. You will also be shown how to develop their authentic style. The workshop will cover both women's and men's dances. No prior knowledge or experience is required.
Please wear comfortable clothing and footwear, eg. trainers or healed shoes which are no more than 2 inches high.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided during the break, but you are advised to bring a bottle of water (and a light snack if you wish).
Join us in this unique opportunity to discover the authentic dances and treasures of Cyprus!
To secure your place book via Eventbrite or contact Yianna directly.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Yianna Hajiantonis is a British born Greek Cypriot who has grown up in London. Her dance career began late in life, but became a deep rooted passion almost instantly. Yianna has been dancing in a professional capacity for over 20 years and her passion for Greek traditional dancing is still as strong as ever!
During this time, Yianna has danced with several dance groups, attended numerous seminars and taken part in countless costumed performances both in the UK and abroad. As a result, Yianna has accumulated a wealth of knowledge in traditional dances. Her vast portfolio includes dances from all over Greece, including Crete and the islands, Pontos, Asia Minor and Cyprus.
Since acquiring the Opa! Greek Dancing group in South London in 2014, Yianna has taught students of all levels, ages and backgrounds. Yianna's unique approach to teaching is geared towards her students' individual needs. Set in a friendly and relaxed environment, she encourages learning by using carefully selected methods to ensure understanding at every stage. Yianna achieves effective results at all levels, leaving her students feeling proud of their personal successes.
After having studied both men's and women's Cypriot dances, through the Greek Rhythms Dance Teacher Training program, Yianna has developed a particular interest in this area. Realising that these dances are not always given the recognition they deserve, she has decided to embark on a mission to share her knowledge and expertise within a workshop setting, in order to give students a practical and hands-on approach to this unique art form.
