Bringing together music and memory, Rochelle Hoi-Yiu Kwan (aka yiuyiu 瑶瑶) gathers us for an intimate living room listening through the Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 archive of over 35 record collections inherited from her family and neighbors. We’ll explore the ways that stories can live all around us and how you can tune in through song to get started remembering the records, memories, and sonic histories from our homes to far beyond.
This event is a part of the Toronto Living Room Listening series presented by Long Time No See 好久不見 and Chinatown Records 華埠錄音, in partnership with Asiatic Itineraries Research Centre, OCAD University and Venus Fest.
Long Time No See 好久不見 is a non-profit ad hoc group of friends, who are artists and educators in Toronto's Chinatown. Our group brings together artists and educators of different backgrounds and generations of Chinese settlers arriving on Turtle Island at different times and from different places. We honour our ancestors by sharing and teaching the stories of how Chinatown came to be, the histories that have been erased, and, our responsibilities to act in solidarity with Indigenous peoples. Walking along Spadina Avenue today, we are grateful to the Indigenous nations who, for thousands of years, have come to “gihn mehn,” exchange stories, goods and knowledge. @ltnschinatown | ltnschinatown.com
Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 is a homegrown community effort homebased in NYC’s Manhattan Chinatown. DJ historian yiuyiu 瑶瑶 takes on her childhood name to care for & activate the Chinatown Records archive of over 35 record/CD/tape collections inherited from her family & neighbors. All along the way, Chinatown Records 華埠錄音 evolves as an ever-growing record of the people we love, who bring all this music to life with us. @chinatownrecordsproject @rochellehkwan | chinatownrecords.us
Asiatic Itineraries is a research centre at OCAD University with an agenda to explore Asian diasporic digital storytelling and to advance research network formation amongst BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) scholars, artists, researchers, and community organizers within the arts and arts education in Canada. @asiatic.itineraries
Venus Fest is a Tkaronto/Toronto not-for-profit music festival, mentorship program, and concert series. Founded in 2017, the festival is a new kind of space within music that addresses historical industry challenges from the past while looking to the future. We represent fresh and clear voices that are pushing for change and looking ahead within our communities. We are creating the future today, and our organizing team, artists, funders, and partners stand in support of this work. Come be part of it all at our festival, mentorship, and concert programming, at a unique range of Toronto spaces, where we celebrate local and touring musicians and arts workers. @venusfestival | venusfest.net
