The Paradise is thrilled to partner with the Toronto Film Society to bring classics to the big screen! TFS is one of Canada’s oldest film appreciation groups. It was originally formed in 1948 to meet the demand for Canadian and international forgotten, banned, independent, and fringe sound and silent films, and to support their preservation and restoration.
The Toronto Film Society presents a double feature at one low price!
The Face Behind the Mask (1941)
This unique blend of film noir, horror, and social drama features Peter Lorre as Janos, a recently disfigured immigrant who becomes embroiled in New York City's gritty crime scene after finding himself shunned by society. Janos' love for a blind woman (Evelyn Keyes) is threatened by his criminal ties, leading to tragedy and an inevitably bleak climax. Robert Florey's taut direction and Lorre's sympathetic performance give this movie surprising emotional heft for a film noir. It remains a true standout in the genre. 69 minutes.
Les Yeux Sans Visage / Eyes Without a Face (1960)
A true benchmark of psychological horror, director Georges Franju's masterpiece follows the tale of a brilliant but tormented surgeon as he embarks on a quest to restore his disfigured daughter’s beauty - at a horrible price - after an accident. The film's haunting, macabre atmosphere, with its stunning black-and-white cinematography and visual style, continues to inspire countless filmmakers. Experience one of the most influential horror films of all time on the big screen, and witness this visionary work as it was mean to be seen! This film will be shown in French with English subtitles. 90 minutes.
There will be a brief introduction and door prize giveaway, followed by the first film. The second film will be shown after a 10-15 minute intermission. We expect the event to end at approximately 10 pm.
