Toronto: A Retrospective of Chinkok Tan opens February 7 at Todmorden Mills Papermill Gallery, offering a rare and deeply moving look at the life and work of one of Toronto’s most quietly influential artists and educators.
Running February 7 to March 15, 2026, the exhibition brings together paintings and sketches from 1967 – 2025. At the heart of the exhibition is Tan’s book Toronto – an intimate portrayal of Toronto as seen through the eyes of a new immigrant in 1967. Only 58 hand-printed copies of the book were made with copies held at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto and the National Library of Canada, in addition to a handful of private collections. This exhibit represents the first time the book has been displayed publicly.
Chinkok Tan passed away peacefully on December 23rd, 2025 in Toronto. A public Celebration of Life will be held at the gallery on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 12–3 pm, with a simultaneous livestream available at chinkoktan.com.

“One of the most impressive pieces of screen printing I have seen in many years is a large (13 x 9 in.) 60-page book of beautiful sketches in color by a brilliant young Chinese Canadian, Chin Kok Tan, who did the sketches, wrote the commentary – a highly individual piece of simple writing – and did the screening himself . . . Here is a truly fine arts book . . . Apart from collectors of limited edition fine arts books, purchases have been made by the National Library of Canada, the University of Toronto, University of Saskatoon . . . Each page would make a beautiful framed picture.
