About this Event
Join us for a free workshop work-in-progress of The Performance Project @ University Settlement Artist in Residence Yibin Wang’s new interactive work, Tongues.
Tongues is a gathering, an event, and an audience-participation performance where we’ll re-enact the most mundane daily moments, belt out our go-to karaoke songs, and, of course, explore the art of swearing in our native languages. Performers of Asian descent will first share their personal stories of navigating two language worlds, offering a glimpse into the cultural crossroads they live in. And we invite you to join us in celebrating the power of our mother tongues as we connect and create new shared experiences together.

University Settlement partners with 40,000+ New Yorkers in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn every year to build on our collective strengths as we achieve healthy, stable, and remarkable lives. For nearly 140 years, we’ve fought poverty and systemic inequality by building highly effective social services in collaboration with our neighbors. Established in 1886 as the first Settlement House in the United States, we bring the values of that movement into the 21st century by meeting New Yorkers where they live, listening deeply to all perspectives, and creating space for responsive cooperation.
Since 2007, The Performance Project at University Settlement has been offering local young artists and professional emerging artists opportunities to connect, create and publicly present new work.
