Le chanteur et leader du groupe Editors, Tom Smith, se lance pour la première fois en solo avec le titre « Lights Of New York City », disponible dès maintenant sur Play It Again Sam.
Ce morceau mélancolique évoque la nostalgie de la jeunesse perdue — « une chanson qui regarde en arrière, vers l’émerveillement d’une époque révolue », confie Tom. Épurée et sincère, cette première sortie offre un aperçu du chemin musical qu’il emprunte désormais, loin du son plus massif d’Editors.
Pour ce projet, Tom s’est entouré de l’auteur-compositeur irlandais Iain Archer, avec qui il a façonné les contours de cette nouvelle aventure artistique. Le clip, réalisé par Niall Trask, accompagne parfaitement l’atmosphère intime et contemplative du titre.
Après vingt ans passés à écrire et chanter pour Editors (ainsi que deux albums avec Andy Burrows sous le nom Smith & Burrows), Tom Smith signe ici un retour aux sources : des chansons nées d’une guitare acoustique ou d’un piano, présentées avec simplicité et émotion brute.

Als magnetische frontman van Editors heeft Tom Smith in België natuurlijk geen introductie meer nodig. De Britse band sluit steevast de grote festivals af en speelt in de grootste arena’s. Naast de stuwende postpunk-sound van de groep is het songschrijverschap én de meteen herkenbare, diepe stem van de frontman een belangrijke factor.
Vanuit de nood om terug te keren naar de kern van zijn muziek werkte Smith aan een soloplaat. Net zoals bij Editors vertrok hij van akoestische gitaar en piano, maar dit keer hield hij het eindresultaat bewust eenvoudig. Of zoals hij zelf zegt:
“Artistically I realised I wanted to do something which was a purer representation of the songs I write, in the style I always have, on an acoustic guitar or a piano, presented simply. I’ve got no idea if it’s folky, country’y, crooner’y or what really, I’ve just always had the calling to write and sing sad songs. More often than not those songs grow with the band (Editors) into something else, something bigger, and often something more confrontational, but with this solo project I wanted the recordings to stay simpler and closer to the ideas they were when I conceived them.”
De eerste track, ‘Lights of New York City’, toont meteen de richting van het album aan, dat Tom Smith afwerkte samen met de Ierse singer-songwriter Iain Archer.
Met zijn eerste soloalbum tourt Smith in een stripped-down bezetting langs bijzondere locaties en kerken, waar hij zowel solowerk als intieme versies van Editors-nummers zal spelen. Het wordt een unieke kans om de zanger in een bijzondere setting aan het werk te zien.
