T.K. Blue - Harlem Jazz Series

T.K. Blue—also known as Talib Kibwe—is a saxophonist, flautist, composer, arranger, and educator whose work bridges African, Caribbean, and African-American musical traditions. The son of a Trinidadian mother and Jamaican father, he was raised on Long Island, where Caribbean rhythms and New York jazz shaped his musical identity.

Blue has appeared on over 85 recordings throughout his distinguished career. His jazz education took root at the Jazzmobile Saturday workshop, where he studied under legends including Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Ernie Wilkins, Billy Taylor, and Jimmy Owens, absorbing bebop and hard bop traditions that became foundational to his artistry.

A pivotal three-year collaboration with South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim deepened Blue's commitment to pan-African musical expression, exploring connections across the diaspora. This partnership eventually led him to Paris, where he expanded his international reputation.

Blue's instrumental palette includes saxophone, flute, and kalimba. His playing balances hard-driving intensity with lyrical sensitivity, infusing jazz with calypso rhythms, reggae grooves, and island melodies. As an educator, he ensures future generations understand jazz as a pan-African art form, remaining a vital voice in contemporary jazz.
