Sophisticated new techniques, often reliant on quantum phenomena, can now make measurements of our universe in ways that go beyond the merely excellent and start to sound magical – but they’re real! These include the ability to measure the properties of individual particles of light, techniques like “ghost imaging” where we can take pictures of something by looking at light that never touches the objects in the picture and “superresolution” where telescopes can see finer details than conventional imaging optics can allow, using lasers to measure the distance between objects to less than a thousandth the diameter of a proton, or sensing gravity exquisitely precisely by looking at atoms that are in two places at once! These magical technologies will help us learn more than ever before about the universe we live in.
