Rachel Riggs explores themes influencing our day-to-day lives as a key part of her work, the anxieties of covid pandemic and climate crisis interrupting our domestic spaces, and our relationship to the natural environment. If we lock our doors, board our windows, and stay inside with our own, if we work hard and hold on tight, will we survive? With severe heatwaves and bushfires becoming more common, she considers our idea of home in a fragile world and the faith of hope.
Her works in acrylic painting, collage, and sculpture link to an unstable post-Covid world as a now normalised experience. A sense of impermanence, tenuous and liminal is expressed, with Surrealist imagery created instinctively from the subconscious, moving to a contemporary perspective via the female gaze.
Rachel Riggs is a multi-disciplinary artist/activist exploring the superimposition of discarded fragments of society. Re-assembled to present hidden traces of female identity, whether personal or collective. Rachel’s work often identifies the social history of women, utilising vintage papers, objects, and materials. Drawing on her background in theatre, she creates visual storytelling artworks in mixed media and mindfully creates acrylic paintings exploring her internal landscape. Her work is created intuitively within the liminal space, instinctive and responsive to the objects and materials. She often exhibits in non-art gallery spaces to reach a broader audience.
‘Riggs work nudges the viewer into reconsidering their viewpoint as much with the bite of her humour as the hunger of her commitment’.
