About this Event
Following its recent postponement, the exhibition “George Pol. Georghiou - Timeless Cyprus” returns to London, presented at the The Hellenic Centre as part of the cultural programme marking Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union (2026).
The exhibition is presented by the A. G. Leventis Gallery, in collaboration with the High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in the United Kingdom, and with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Cyprus.
This is the first international presentation of the exhibition following its debut in Nicosia in 2022.
Through his work, George Polyviou Georghiou (1901-1972) emerges as a defining figure in the visual narration of Cyprus’s modern history. His paintings, created mainly during the 1940s and 1950s, capture the island through its people, its landscapes and its everyday life, forming a deeply personal yet collective portrait of Cyprus.
Many of the works presented were, for decades, inaccessible in Famagusta. Their return and presentation today mark an important moment in the ongoing effort to preserve and share Cyprus’s cultural heritage.
Georghiou’s artistic language draws on both Cypriot experience and wider European influences, echoing traditions that range from religious iconography to modern European painting. His compositions bring together symbols, figures and spaces into a rich visual world where memory, history and identity coexist.
The exhibition is curated by Loukia Loizou Hadjigavriel, Katerina Stephanides, and follows the vision of the late Eleni S. Nikita.
General coordination is led by Despina Georghiou Hadjinicolaou and Anastasia Mina, with educational programmes by Theodora Demetriou and Marios Theocharous. Architectural design is by Nayia Savvides, with video by Constantinos S. Constantinides, text editing by Alexandra Pel, and translation by Despina Pirketti.
These curated tours offer an opportunity to experience the exhibition within its full historical and cultural context.
