Tim Freedman is the lead singer, songwriter and pianist of legendary Australian folk rock group The Whitlams. He will perform the best of his renowned nine album repertoire with pedal steel and electric guitarist Ollie Thorpe.
His latest album is an Americana tinged collection of songs titled “Kookaburra”, which sat atop the Australian Country Album charts from March to May 2024.
Since 2022 a reinvigorated Freedman has led The Whitlams in a resurgence, touring heavily and releasing two new albums. Between band tours he has started performing smaller country towns in duo mode, and this piano/pedal steel configuration has developed delicate atmospherics to suit the poignant narratives in Freedman’s songs.
“His songs splash colours across a portrait of a lonesome, inner-city suburbia that few others can match for original detail and authenticity. Underlined by Freedman’s distinctively wistful, unadorned vocal delivery, The Whitlams have never sounded even mildly like anybody else.”
Newcastle Herald, Mar 2, 2022
“…backed by the City Recital Hall’s prize Steinway grand, the tall and gangly front man charmed and cajoled his 600-strong “spaced out” audience with all the debonair flair of a Brian Ferry, complete with a natty light grey suit.
Over the next hour or so he rummaged through his unique brand of narrative classics – and some new ones as well – touching on love, politics, crime and the rock and roll lifestyle. The stripped back accompaniment of the piano highlighted just how cleverly constructed his lyrics are – they sound so uncontrived, which is hellish difficult to do as any would-be songwriter will tell you.” – Wentworth Courier, 25 Nov, 2020
